OWNERS COMMENTS:
Mabel won the prestigious 'Bouvet Ladubay' trophy awarded by the La Rochelle Maritime Museum for the best designed, restored and maintained yacht in 2012.
Recent racing successes: Winner of the 'Grand Prix de la Rade de Brest' for classic yachts at the 2016 Brest Maritime Festival. In 2016 Plymouth - La Rochelle Revival Race Mabel was 4th over the line at La Rochelle and was 4th on corrected time in the overall results.
Mabel is an exquisite yacht of exceptional quality, in excellent structural condition, beautifully presented and in full commission ready for sea. Her restoration in 2006-8 was not just cosmetic but a total structural refit which fully addressed all the fundamental issues that can affect a yacht of this age and put her back into first class condition. The refit was carried out by Dartmouth master boat builder, Peter Nash working with the owner who is also a qualified boat builder.
It would be difficult to find a better yacht, sound from truck to keelson and worthy of the excellent workmanship and quality of the original build. She has all the beauty and benefits one expects of a fine classic yacht, but unusually, these are combined with the space and ease of handling of a more modern design, giving her owner all the benefits of a classic yacht without the drawbacks one so commonly has to accept.
Mabel’s performance is as one would expect from a Kim Holman yacht designed as an offshore cruiser/racer. She is a very weatherly, sea-kindly and stiff yacht that can be sailed hard and will look after her crew in a blow. She makes fast passages and does well racing, has a comfortable motion and is a joy to handle from the safe comfortable cockpit. With her modern sail handling gear she can be sailed comfortably by 2.
It is very rare to find such an outstanding classic yacht is such excellent condition.
HISTORY & 2006-8 REFIT DETAILS :
Mabel is an exceptionally fine yacht designed by one of England’s best marine architects of the day and built to Lloyds 100A1 by one of the country’s best wooden boatbuilders at a time when they were producing some of the finest workmanship in wooden yacht building.
Mabel is the third of three yachts built to Kim Holman’s design number 65. Kim Holman was an outstandingly gifted British yacht designer of the 1960’s with a good number of highly successful designs to his name. His career was unfortunately cut short by personal circumstances; if it had not been, there can be little doubt that he would have gained wider international acclaim alongside the world’s greatest post-war yacht designers.
Mabel was bought by her current owner in 2005 and between 2006 and 2008 Mabel underwent a major restoration in Devon to put her back into top class condition.
The restoration work was carried out by one of (some will say the best) shipwright in SW England working with the owner who is also a qualified boatbuilder. She has since been meticulously maintained by her owner and is offered in outstanding structural and cosmetic condition.
